NEWBURY & DISTRICT BUS ROUTES

Newbury & District is a name synonymous with public transport in West Berkshire since 1932. 85 years later we’re proud to be providing the very highest levels of service with modern buses and a small team of friendly drivers.

Alterations to services 1A/1C from Monday 30th July 2018

We are pleased to confirm that as from 30th July 2018 our services 1A and 1C will be modified to serve Kennet Heath estate in Thatcham on all journeys in both directions from Thatcham Broadway to The Moors (Nevil Court). Service 1C will follow the former 102 route from Thatcham Broadway via Station Road, Urquhart Road, Kennet Heath Bus Gate, Braemore Close and Ilkley Way, serving all stops along the way, before joining the existing route at The Moors (Nevil Court). Service 1A will follow the reverse of the same route towards Thatcham Broadway. The current operator has recently announced that their off peak Monday to Friday “Jet Red 102” service is to be withdrawn on Friday 27th July 2018

Our current service pattern will be followed with some minor adjustments to timings. We have also taken the opportunity to amend a couple of peak hour journeys slightly to further improve the reliability of our services. Please check departure times for Monday 30th July onward as your usual bus might be one of those leaving a little earlier from that date. We have, however, carefully designed these timetables to cause the minimum possible disruption to our customers’ existing travel arrangements.

We have taken the decision to re-route the 1A/1C via Kennet Heath in an effort to make life a little easier for a number of our customers who currently walk through from Kennet Heath to The Moors to catch the bus every day and walk back again on their way home. We are also aware that some former customers with reduced mobility have felt very isolated following the gradual reduction in service through Kennet Heath over the past couple of years and the complete disappearance of buses on Saturdays. There will now be a bus approximately every hour in each direction, Mondays to Saturdays, all day, and we very much look forward to welcoming back a number of old friends to our services. All existing bus stops will still be served.

These services are operated on an entirely commercial basis by Newbury and District Limited with no financial support from any local authority, either directly or indirectly. We therefore rely on your continued custom to keep the services running, either in cash fares or by using your concessionary card, for which we do gratefully receive some reimbursement from the appropriate council, for journeys taken after 0930hrs on Monday to Friday or all day on Saturday. We are, however, still pleased to accept all valid English concessionary cards as well as Kennet Bus and Connect tickets and passes at any time. Obviously if you use our services every day the more customers who buy their Connect tickets on our vehicles the better to help safeguard the future of your bus service, although we do understand that this is not always possible and you will still be equally welcome on board, regardless!

A basic timetable for the revised 1A/1C follow and a revised summary timetable for all our Newbury-Thatcham services follow. Please note that only the 1A/1C have changed, slightly, and all our other services are unaltered. Bus stop timetable displays will be changed along the 1A/1C route and Traveline will have full timetable information. If there is anything else that you would like to ask us about please send us an email or give the office a ring on Monday to Friday, 0900-1700hrs.

We hope that you will be pleased with the new arrangements.

Newbury and District and Kennet Bus Fares from 19th February

Our popular spring saver/super saver fares have now come to an end but we still offer outstanding value fares and passes, many of which are cheaper than they were five years ago!

More Great News for our younger customers and for Concessionary Pass Holders

Building on the success of our initiative to allow Concessionary Pass Holders to use our services free of charge before 0930hrs on Mondays to Fridays on our commercially operated services we are pleased to confirm that this concession has been extended to our recently introduced commercial services that operate before 0930hrs. The full range now consists of 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 103C, 123, 123C and 124. We will continue to receive no reimbursement for your journeys taken before 0930hrs on Mondays to Fridays but please accept this is a small gesture of our thanks for your loyalty to us over the years.

By the same token we are pleased to confirm that the age range for child/student/young people tickets on all our services will apply from their 5th until their 19th birthday.

We continue to be keen participants in the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme and are pleased to accept concessionary cards issued by any local authority in England from 0930hrs on Monday to Friday and at all times on Saturday. These cards are also welcome before 0930hrs on Monday to Friday on our commercially operated services 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 103C, 123, 123C and 124 as we would certainly not wish to discriminate visitors to West Berkshire.

Interchangeability of Period and Return Tickets

The full Connect range of tickets remains welcome on all our services and are available from all our drivers on all services operated by this company. Connect tickets and passes are accepted on services operated by all participating operators within the appropriate zones. Participating operators include Newbury and District, Kennections and West Berkshire Council. Connect Urban and Connect Rural tickets and passes are also accepted on Reading Transport’s Jet Black 1 service between Newbury Bus Station and Thatcham (Colthrop Lane) only.

Kennetbus passes and return tickets are available from our drivers on services 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D. They are fully interchangeable between these services but may only be used on these services. They are not accepted by any other operator or on any other services.

Service 1B

Our new service 1B is identical to our fast, direct service 1D between Newbury and Thatcham but en route from Thatcham to Newbury it stops at Benham Hill/Southdown Road before calling at the West Berkshire Community Hospital, extending the journey by just a couple of minutes but restoring a regular Monday to Saturday service between Benham Hill and Newbury for the first time in many years. On Saturdays service 1B will replace service 1D entirely but will operate every thirty minutes instead of every hour.

Service 103

Services 103, 103A and 103B continue to be sponsored by The Greenham Trust with financial support from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council over the Bishop’s Green section of route on these three services. Services 103C and 103X are operated commercially by Newbury and District Limited. We have often been told that our customers found the global service number 103 confusing and so we have tried to make them more easily identifiable. Services 103/103C operate via Greenham Road and The Nightingales, Service 103A operates via Wash Common and Service 103B operates via Wendan Road. Service 103X is a direct, schooldays only journey from the Bus Station to The Oaks.

Service 123

Service 123 is a new service which replaces large sections of service 9/9A/9B/9C (which are no longer operated by this company) and links the Mill Lane/Boundary Road/Kings Road area with both the town centre as well as serving the Racecourse development and providing both with a new direct link to Newbury Retail Park/Tesco Triangle. This service combines with service 103 to give customers from the Greenham Road/Nightingales a much improved service. Service 123C is extended to/from Tesco Triangle to/from Newbury College.

Service 124

Service 124 is an exciting new off peak, cross town, Monday to Friday shopping service which links Glendale Avenue with Speen and includes Newbury Railway Station, Newbury Bus Station and Park Way.

Easy Access

All our buses have a wide, step free entrance, making them particularly suitable for wheelchair users, those with restricted mobility and passengers with pushchairs, lots of shopping and/or small children. We do not operate minibuses or crew buses on any of our services. All our buses are powered by the latest Euro 5 or Euro 6 low emission engines, resulting in all our fleet being extremely environmentally friendly.

More information about these and other public transport services is available via the Council's Public Transport website.

PRIVATE CHARTER

Our buses are also available to hire; we offer a range of sizes from 29 to 86 seats, so please call 01635 33855 or email: with your requirements.
